ELECTORAL SYSTEM IN NAGERIA

Voting rights are granted to all Nigerians who are at least 18 years old.

The presidential, National Assembly, state and local elections are all determined by popular vote. In the presidential election, the winning candidate must receive not only the majority of the votes, but also more than a quarter of the vote in at least two-thirds of the states.

If the requirements aren't met, the Independent National Electoral Commission, a federal body that oversees election procedures, will arrange for a runoff between the top two candidates.

In the 2003, 69 percent of the population voted in the presidential elections, while 49 percent voted in the 2003 National Assembly elections, according to INEC.
